Searching for a new job can be a frustrating experience. From finding the right opportunities to dealing with resume black holes to a total lack of feedback after an interview, it’s enough to make any job seeker want to throw in the towel.
But did you know that by working with a recruiting agency, you can actually make your job search a whole lot easier? A recruiter from an agency can help you polish your resume and interviewing skills, and also give you access to job opportunities that aren’t always advertised.
That said, there are some bad behaviors that are a major turn-off to recruiters. So what are they? And how can you avoid them? Here’s a look:
Bad Behavior #1. Being Unprofessional.
The recruiter doesn’t work for you; he or she works for the employer that’s looking to hire. As a result, if you act in an unprofessional manner (show up late to appointments, dress inappropriately, act rudely, etc.), then the recruiter likely won’t want to present you as a candidate for the best job opportunities…or any at all.
Bad Behavior #2. Lying to Your Recruiter.
Recruiters actually do have a vested interest in seeing you succeed. In fact, they are very interested in your success because they want to ensure their client – the employer – is satisfied.
But in order for a recruiter to match you with the best opportunities, you must be honest and upfront about your background, your job requirements, and your career goals. If you lie about any of those things, the recruiter will eventually find out…and you’ll be the one to lose out in the end.
Bad Behavior #3. Being Overly Sensitive.
Recruiters not only have a wealth of industry insight, but they know the inside scoop on the organizations they’re sourcing candidates for. So if they’re giving you feedback on your resume, your interviewing skills (or lack of), or any other area they think you need to improve in, take their advice. Remember, the recruiter wants to see you succeed, so you may need to rework some things, like your resume, to set yourself apart and land a job.
Bad Behavior #4. Harassing a Recruiter.
If you haven’t heard from your recruiter in a while, then it’s ok to check in occasionally. Not only will you find out how you did on an interview or whether you’re in the running for a job, but you’ll also develop a stronger personal relationship as a result.
That said, do not call, email, or text your recruiter every day, multiple times a day. That’s a quick way to get black listed. Recruiters want to work with job candidates who are committed and enthusiastic…not crazy.
The bottom line is that a recruiting agency can be a great resource to help you find a job. And by avoiding the bad behaviors above, you can make the most of your relationship with your recruiter.
